Christopher Newport University

Company Overview

Christopher Newport University is a special place. We are friendly, caring and energetic, and strive for excellence in all that we do. We seek talented and committed faculty and staff who will embrace and share our core values. Our reach and reputation are growing, and CNU is well on its way to becoming one of America's pre-eminent public liberal arts and sciences universities.

At Christopher Newport University we care about minds and hearts. Our primary purpose is to form good citizens and leaders. We believe real success is a life well lived. We want our students to choose to live lives of meaning and consequence and purpose. We call that a life of significance.

Because we care about minds, our curriculum is based on the liberal arts and sciences. We emphasize the study of leadership and have developed a nationally respected President's Leadership Program. Our core curriculum is rigorous, cited by the American Council of Trustees and Alumni as the strongest core curriculum of any public college or university in America.

Because we care about hearts, our students perform thousands of hours of community service. We built a chapel and celebrate our speaking tradition and honor code.

We want our students to lead, serve, engage and set the world on fire. That’s what makes Christopher Newport special.

Company History

Founded in 1960 as Christopher Newport College, a two-year branch of the College of William & Mary, we are in Coastal Virginia, in the city of Newport News. Christopher Newport gained independence in 1977 and became a university in 1992.

Christopher Newport is named for the 17th-century mariner who helped establish the Jamestown colony, the first permanent English-speaking settlement in the New World, just a few miles from our campus.

Today, Christopher Newport is a four-year public university that enrolls 5,000 students in rigorous and rewarding academic programs in the liberal arts and sciences through the College of Arts and Humanities, the College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences, the College of Social Sciences, and the Luter School of Business. CNU offers great teaching and small class sizes with an emphasis on leadership, civic engagement and honor.

For example, an employee currently making $25,400 would be entitled to $52,000 worth of group life insurance ($26,000 x 2 = $52,000). There are additional benefits associated with your basic group life policy.

Employees may also purchase additional long-term care insurance.

An employee-paid, long-term disability plan is also available through The Hartford for employees not enrolled in the VRS or those in the traditional sick leave program under VRS. Employees may also purchase long-term care insurance.

Long-term care programs administered by the VRS provide help with everyday life tasks because of a prolonged health problem or following a major illness, injury or surgery.
