Own the data tier of one of VA's most complex cloud platforms. As the MongoDB Engineer & Administrator, you will manage MongoDB Enterprise Advanced instances supporting mission-critical scheduling, telehealth, and digital health applications.
Position Description: The MongoDB Engineer & Administrator manages all aspects of MongoDB Enterprise Advanced across production, staging, and sandbox environments including performance tuning, backup and recovery, encryption, secrets management, and vendor coordination.
Tasks/activities include, but are not limited to:
- Administers all MongoDB Enterprise Advanced instances across production, staging, and sandbox environments
- Manages MongoDB performance including query optimization, index management, and capacity planning
Identifies performance degradation before it impacts platform services - Implements and maintains MongoDB backup policies ensuring 15-minute snapshots retained 7 days, daily snapshots retained 30 days, and monthly snapshots retained 60 days with retrieval times not exceeding 1 minute
- Implements and operates MongoDB secrets management through HashiCorp Vault and AWS Secrets Manager
- Ensures automated rotation for 100% of credentials where supported and manual rotation at least every 90 days
- Ensures all MongoDB configuration is provisioned through approved Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tooling (e.g., Terraform)
- Prohibits manual production changes except through approved break-glass procedures
- Supports daily Change Control Board (CCB) meetings for MongoDB-related changes
- Ensures all production changes execute within government-approved windows with documented backout plans
- Supports the Scheduling Event Bus by providing MongoDB data tier design and operational support for event-driven workloads
- Coordinates with the Vulnerability Analyst and Security team to conduct and remediate MongoDB vulnerability scans
- Ensures versions remain on approved releases with no end-of-life software in production
- Contributes MongoDB metrics, incident reports, and performance data to the Monthly Maintenance Report
Compensation & Benefits: The annual projected pay range for this position is $81,284 - $116,894 with consideration being given to various factors including but not limited to qualifications, experience, job responsibilities, and geographic location.

Requirements
Minimum/General Experience: 3 years of experience administering MongoDB Enterprise Advanced in production cloud environments
Minimum Education: Bachelor's Degree in computer science, information technology, or related field; MongoDB Certified DBA Associate (preferred)
Essential Skills/Qualifications:
- Excellent experience administering MongoDB Enterprise Advanced including replica sets, sharding, performance tuning, index optimization, and capacity planning at enterprise scale
- Excellent knowledge of MongoDB backup and recovery including scheduled snapshots, point-in-time recovery, and restoration validation
- Excellent experience with MongoDB security including encryption at rest and in transit, RBAC, field-level encryption, and integration with HashiCorp Vault and AWS Secrets Manager
- Excellent ability to manage MongoDB in containerized Kubernetes/EKS environments including stateful workload management and persistent volume configuration
- Excellent experience with MongoDB monitoring
- Above average ability to configure alerting for performance degradation, storage thresholds, and replication lag
- Above average experience implementing MongoDB as part of event-driven architectures integrating with Kafka/MSK for scheduling and healthcare data pipelines
- Above average knowledge of vulnerability scanning and remediation for MongoDB
- Experience supporting a federal agency
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
