Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Aquatics Coordinator oversees the seasonal aquatics operation including associated personnel and programming. General duties include recruiting, training, certifying, and supervising of aquatic staff, coordinating daily safety checks, organizing swim lessons, and lifeguarding and teaching classes as necessary. While aquatics operations will be a significant part of the job responsibilities, this position will also manage other recreation department programming areas outside of pool season including, but not limited to, adult sports leagues, fitness offerings, and special events.

The ideal candidate can communicate effectively, maintain a positive attitude, and provide high-quality customer service. Excellent attention to detail, time management, teamwork, and problem-solving skills are desired. This position requires a motivated individual who can think creatively, set priorities, and meet deadlines.

Applicant must be willing to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays to accommodate programming and event needs. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Aquatics
    • Assists with pre-season preparation, daily operation, and post-season closure of the Forest Park Pool.
    • Responsible for recruiting, hiring, certifying, training, and supervising part-time and seasonal staff.
    • Assumes duties as a lifeguard, swim instructor or other positions as needed.
    • Conduct daily safety checks, inspections, water testing and general maintenance.
    • Coordinate swim lessons, pool parties, rentals, swim meets and other special events during pool season.
    • Respond to emergency situations as needed.
  • Recreation
    • Oversee the operation of various recreation programs such as adult sports leagues, fitness offerings, or special events based off organizational and community needs.
    • Develop, schedule, promote and operate assigned programs
  • Other
    • Continually evaluate assigned programs ensuring maximum efficiency and outline future goals.
    • Oversee payroll and schedules of part-time staff associated with assigned areas of supervision.
    • Participate in the preparation and distribution of program marketing materials.
    • Assist in daily office operations.
    • Must have strong communication skills and ability to build relationships within the community.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
    • Demonstrate strong customer-service and conflict-resolution skills.
    • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.


Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable. The following are guidelines of typical ways to obtain the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Education:  Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation, Sport Management, Park and Recreation Administration or a related field.


  • Required: 1-3 years relative experience involved with aquatics operations and programming.
  • Preferred: 0-1 years of experience within recreation areas such as: adult sports, fitness, or special events.
  • Preferred: Minimum 1-year supervisory experience.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must have, or be able to obtain, nationally recognized aquatic certification (AFO/CPO).
  • Must have, or be able to obtain, national lifeguard and lifeguard training instructor certification.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • CPR, AED, and First Aid within 6 months.

Residency:             Must establish and maintain residency within 35 miles of Ottawa city limits within 6 months of hire.

Hours:                   Variable schedule, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
